No one likes to be criticized—even when it is deserved! The truth is, however, that every one of us could use improvement. So instead of hating to be criticized, think of it as a gift that will help you be better in the future. Here are some tips for receiving criticism from your co-workers gracefully.

  • One: Request that the conversation occur in private. If a co-worker is being critical of something you have done, ask that you continue the conversation in private so that you can both openly discuss the situation.
  • Two: Be open to hearing your co-worker’s comments. Let your co-worker know you value their opinion and that you want to understand why they are being critical.
  • Three: Ask your co-worker for suggestions for improving the situation. Once you understand the nature of the problem, ask for suggestions as to how to improve the situation. You should also suggest ideas for improving the situation.
  • Four: Be Flexible. Let your co-worker know that you are willing to try different ways of correcting whatever the problem is. Your flexibility will be greatly rewarded in the future.
  • Five: Don’t be overly defensive. Often, when someone is overly defensive, they miss the opportunity to learn from their mistakes.
  • Six: Apologize if you really have done something wrong and promise to do better in the future!
